So why do Chefs have that Special Uniform?

What image comes into your mind when someone says chef? Well of course, someone wearing that traditional white double breasted jacket and that long white hat called a toque! This image has been ubiquitous with chefs around the world. Anyone who sees a man (or a woman) wearing something like this will automatically assume that person works in the culinary industry and is probably a chef.

Since hospitality and culinary industries have gotten bigger than ever, chef uniforms have also changed since back when they were first worn! According to some sources, during the mid nineteenth century, chefs first started wearing this sort of a uniform. Before the coat, chefs were already wearing the toque but Marie-Antoine Careme, a French chef, made the coat popular too! The coat was worn as a sign of honor to the chef. Most chef uniforms are white, but one might wonder why white? Well, white was chosen as a sign of cleanliness!

These days, the modern chef can be seen wearing a hat, a coat, a cravat, stripped trousers and special footwear. This is all that comprises of a uniform worn by a chef! Let's try to figure out that why would a chef want to wear all this.

Toque or Hat: Since the culinary industry has grown to gargantuan proportions, most countries legally require chefs to wear a hat. It's quite understandable why chefs would want to wear something like that! As we know that hygiene is everything in the culinary industry, it is absolutely important to prevent any stray hair from falling into the food. And hence the mystery of that hat is solved.
The Coat: As mentioned above, the coat was originally worn as a sign of honor but a lot has changed since then. A coat is extremely essential for maintaining hygiene in the kitchen because they act as a barrier and are also useful for protecting the chef from heat and fire. Plus, another great benefit of wearing white is that it's very easy to detect when it gets dirty, so you can regularly clean them.
Footwear: Since working in a professional kitchen revolves around dealing with heavy pots and containers, a chef's feet should be the most protected. And this is why we have special footwear available for chefs! This special footwear mostly comprises of heavy duty steel boots to protect the toes and the feet from injury.
So now you know why chefs coat wear that Special Uniform every time they cook and what all it comprises of!
